In the past, microwave heating of infant formula was not recommended because of its unknown effects on nutrients and the potential danger of scald burns from overly heating or unevenly heating of infant formula.  We now believe that microwave heating does not adversely effect formula (we do not know whether it adversely effects the antibodies of breast milk).  There is still the potential danger of accidental burns if not heated properly.  While formula does not really have to be heated, many people choose to do so and choose to use the microwave because of convenience.  Below is protocol for heating formula.

                                                            Microwave Protocol

 Prior to heating

**         Heat only 4 oz. or more

            **         Heat only refrigerated formula

**         Always stand the bottle up

**         Always leave the bottle top uncovered to allow heat to escape

 Heating instructions (full power)

**         4 oz. bottle:  Heat for no more than 30 seconds

**         8 oz. bottle:  Heat for no more than 45 seconds

 Serving instructions

            **         Always replace nipple assembly

**         Invert 10 minutes (vigorous shaking is unnecessary)

**         Formula should be cool to touch:  Formula warm to the touch may be

                        too hot to serve.

**         Always test formula on tongue or top of hand (not the wrist)
